Description

From 11 til 18 May we travelled with some friends to Tenerife, for a holiday combined with the observation of the total lunar eclipse during the morning of 16 May 2022.  From Belgium, the eclipse would happen just as the Moon set during bright twilight.  We looked for a hotel with a good view of the horizon over sea to the south and west with the first intention to observe from our hotel.  During planning the few months before we decided to rent a car for our company of 7 people to travel around the island and giving us the opportunity to find a better observing place.  We chose the Mirador de los Poleos at 1440m altitude.  This was a good location to experience the phenomenon.  As I knew we had a good chance to see the Milkyway during the totality, I planned to make an image of the eclipsed Moon with the Milkyway with a 35mm Samyang lens.  I was surprised that the Milkyway slowly became visible already when the Moon was only about 50% eclipsed, during the partial fase.  I was making images of the Moon with my 60mm f/10 refractor but changed this to the 35mm lens at about mid totality.  This image is a mosaic from two images exposed 30s.  In this 30s exposure, the eclipsed Moon was overexposed, so I layered a 15s exposure of the Moon in the image.
